in- 是常见的表示否定的前缀,表示"不、无、非"等否定意义。
1.十一世纪以前，英语外来语词汇很少。到了1066年，法国西北部的诺曼人侵入英国，这使得大量的法语和拉丁语词汇渗入英语，in-就是这时带进来的前缀
2.In-大都构成形容词，如：incorrect,invisible等。但也能构成名词，如：informality。
3.有时，同一个词根，形容词前加un-，名词前加in-，如：unequal-inequality,unable-inability,unjust-injustice。
4.in-有几个变体：il-,im-,ir-,ig-。所不同的是：因为发音同化的道理，
il-用在只发一个[l]音前，如：illegal,illiterate;
im-用在发音是{m}或{p}前，如：impossible,immobile;
ir-用在发音是{r}前，如：irregular,irresponsible;
ig-用在发音是{n}前，如：ignore,ignoble,ignorant。
5.in-是拉丁语前缀，所以常用在拉丁语后缀是-ate,-ant,-ent,-ite,-ible的形容词前，如：inadequate,incessant,inconsistent,indefinite。但也有例外，如：unfortunate。
6.以in-或im-开头的词，不再加in-而用un-，如：unimaginable,unimportant,unimproved。但也例外，如：inimitable。
